MacDonald’s nimble prose and detailed recall of grim times long past make for luminous reading; his hard-won conception of how ghettoized poverty spawns localized violence, and the dignity he brings to lives snuffed out in chaos, gives All Souls a moral urgency usually lacking in current memoir or crime prose. At first when you look at the books cover, you will think you will not like it because it as pictures of little kids and you might think its about the life of some little kids.

She had two teenaged children that had already dropped southi of school, younger kids that were abusing drugs with their friends in the apartment they all lived in and she was nowhere to be found. But the sample was so powerful that I had to read more. But then I also felt like the mother could have done more.

White poverty is a taboo subject and as someone raised outside of Boston the other side of the frmo I have been dancing around this book for years, people recommended it to me or it was mentioned in conversations, I even recommended it to someone myself when we were talking about Black Mass, though I hadn’t read it myself.
As they move through the 60’s and 70’s the teens in the family face the more serious challenges of the era Please remove or replace such wording and instead of making soutbie about a subject’s importance, use facts and attribution to demonstrate that importance.

In the entirety of this book I couldn’t find an instance where there was a completely reliable adult present. The MacDonald family is gloriously dysfunctional, brought up by a single mother whose wisdom is matched only by her wildness.
My view of Boston will never be the same again. As a Southerner, I’ve observed and been a part of that dynamic time and time again. But this story is really much more than the busing riots. Probably only if you have a particular interest in Boston history or urban housing issues, but if ffrom DO, then it’s a good read. This worthwhile novel, itself, is actually timeless in aouthie themes of family crisis, intervention, and survival. Daniel Patrick Moynihan is never mentioned but he and his famous report loom rather large in this story.
It’s interesting to read this book and feel as though there’s some universality in it. So many people told me I was going to love this book. I was born and raised in New England and I have heard at one point that Southie is pretty tough, but Famuly never really cared enough to think about it. If you can get through fami,y litany of death and disaster in the middle, the story gains an adult perspective and once again commands attention. I do believe all these realities create huge roadblocks to people being able to change their predicament.
